Five Months, Three Generations: A Family Photoshoot in Amsterdam

Two sessions, five months apart. A growing family, and a little more of their story to keep.

In May, we photographed a family of four: two parents and their two young children. Last month, they returned to 21’s Light Spot for another family photoshoot in Amsterdam. This time, the grandparents joined them.

Only five months separated the sessions, yet the photographs already tell different stories. With young children, growth makes even a short interval visible. Returning to the camera gives those changes a place in the family archive.

From May to October: Photographs That Witness Growth

Some changes happen so gradually that we notice them most clearly in photographs.

Placed alongside the May portraits, the October series becomes a record of the children growing into themselves. Each session preserves a particular age, a particular closeness, and the way the family fits together at that moment.

This is one of the pleasures of returning family photography: the images begin to speak to one another. What starts as a collection of portraits becomes a story across seasons, with room for each new chapter.

Three Generations, Together in Amsterdam

The grandparents’ presence gave this second session another dimension. Alongside the children’s growth, there was now a wider family connection to photograph: three generations sharing time in Amsterdam.

A multigenerational family photoshoot makes space for everyone, both in the full family portrait and in smaller combinations. Grandparents with grandchildren, parents with their children, and the adults together each reveal a different part of the same story.

We guide these arrangements throughout the session, helping everyone find their place while leaving room for the gestures that happen naturally between people who know one another well.

Finding the Children’s Rhythm

Photographing babies brings its own pace. Attention wanders, expressions change, and a carefully arranged portrait can become something entirely unexpected within seconds.

Our experience with young children helps us work with that movement. Gentle direction, playful interaction and time to settle create opportunities for smiles to emerge. There is room for a reassuring cuddle or a pause whenever it is needed.

As the pressure to perform eases, parents can relax into the experience too. We bring structure to the session while allowing the children’s personalities to shape the photographs.

A Family Gallery with Many Moods

A family’s story holds humor, tenderness, playfulness and romance. We approach each gallery with space for all of them.

Whole-family portraits sit alongside smaller encounters. Photographs of the children bring their own energy; portraits of the parents offer a moment to remember their connection as a couple. The grandparents add another expression of affection and belonging.

Thoughtful composition and a consistent approach to color bring these different moods together. Our aim is an elegant, timeless series that remains personal as the children grow and the photographs acquire new meaning.
